Ostuni, also known as “the white town”… I wonder why…
It belongs to an area of Puglia where all the villages are made by houses all white-washed! Painting with water and quicklime, especially in the past, was a way to sanitise the air and keep dangerous insects, like mosquitoes bring malaria, away from the sections where poor families used to live.
The old town of Ostuni, where you are still forced to keep everything white, is a maze of little alleys and steps; don’t simply visit the main street full of shops; get lost and find unique corners!
